Our teeth should be really important to us. We all like to have a white, full smile every now and then. That’s the reason why in this article we will try to give you some useful information about dental health.
Let’s start quick and easy. To put it simply Dentistry or dental/oral medicine is a special branch of medicine that’s focused on teeth, gums and of course mouths of patients. It makes sure to diagnose, prevent treat or manage most if not all disorders, diseases or conditions of one’s mouth. Dentistry’s been with us for a long while now, so it’s no secret it’s history goes back almost as back as the history of the humankind. We are able to find evidence of dentistry and dentists as far back as 7000 BC. That’s a lot of years to get more advanced in providing for human teeth!
Because dentists had so many years to evolve, dentistry managed to split into many specializations. Our teeth are really complex, which made branching out to those much more needed. Over all current dentistry has around nineteen possible specializations that dentists can branch out to. In New York there’s a lot of dentists, with some of them already specialized in one of the possible fields. So make sure to get some of that Astoria dental service next time ‘round! For now let’s back up to dentistry in itself. We shortly and briefly talked about what it is and its history, but it cannot just be glanced upon, we need to understand it a bit more. So let us talk a bit more about the complexity of our teeth’s anatomy. Human teeth are required to be resilient so we can mechanically break down food, or to simply put it, eat. They’re considered to be one of the parts of the human digestive system. As we probably already know humans tend to develop two different sets of teeth, first are deciduous teeth or can also be called baby teeth, and of course our adult teeth. The crown of our teeth is mostly composed of dentin, with the pulp chamber inside.
The root is what’s below, with pulp canals inside it. As you probably already know humans have around 32 adult teeth, which are classified as incisors, canines, premolars and molars. Incisors are what make cuts in our food, hence why they’re called incisors, canines are for tearing up our beloved food, just as a lion would tear up its pray, while molars we use for simple chewing and grinding. But what if one day we wake up, feeling pain, our teeth start to hurt? Well if we ever find our teeth hurting we should make sure to get them checked out by a dentist. There are many reasons for our teeth to hurt, some of them require simple solutions, while others will need experts to take care of. That’s why sometimes dentists might refer us to different dentists, but with specializations in one of the dental fields, for example if our tooth pain is caused by our enamel we might be referred to an endodontist.
It’s a special kind of dentist, who after additional three years of education is fully prepared to take care of infections or inflammation of our teeth. They mostly take care of problems of the tooth pulp. When the pulp is infected an educated endodontist can decide whether to remove the tooth fully or to perform a root canal. That surgery can allow to preserve a tooth. It consists of removing the tooth’s nerve and pulp that has became damaged or infected. While it’s true any dentist can perform root canals, they prefer to pass their root canals to an endodontist, who tends to have more experience.
